Facility Location: Buncombe County is located in the mountains of North Carolina. The bioreactor site is approximately nine miles north of the City of Asheville on Panther Branch Road near the French Broad River.

Background: Opened in September 1997, the facility includes a Subtitle D landfill disposal area, a C&D landfill, a wood waste mulching facility, a convenience center for residential waste disposal, household hazardous waste and recycling, and a drop-off area for white goods and tires. 

The Subtitle D landfill disposal area comprises approximately 100 acres of the 600-acre site.  The landfill consists of 10 separate disposal cells that will be constructed sequentially over the estimated 30-year life of the facility.

Bioreactor Background: First began retrofit of Cells 1-3 in 2005.
